Jambalaya, the Musical is Headed to the Stage!
The word is out! Jambalaya, the Musical, a new work by award-winning creator Nancy Gregory that draws on the talents of Emmy and Grammy award winners and a local cast, will have its first public preview in early September, The workshop performance of Jambalaya, the Musical hits the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 at the Heymann Performing Arts Center in Lafayette. Tickets are $25 and are on sale at the Heymann Center and through TicketMaster.com (online fees apply).
Inspired by the music, culture, folklore and mystic qualities of south Louisiana, Gregory set off to create this new theater work–firmly committed to a spirit of authenticity and accuracy—that she intends to be a joyful celebration of the unique, rich culture she experienced through her own visits to Louisiana. Rehearsals began August 1 at Gerami Academy in Lafayette, LA.
Gregory has pulled together an artistic team that includes musical director Kennard Ramsey, an accomplished jazz artist and movie and television score writer; Grammy winner and Songwriter Hall of famer Jeff Barry, known for his long list of Billboard hits, including River Deep Mountain High, Chapel of Love and Leader of the Pack; set designer Joe Stewart, a multiple Emmy Award winner (Friends, the Ellen Degeneres Show, Two and a Half Men, included) and a native of Lafayette.
Michael Shapiro, the project’s business manager, is an entertainment attorney who specializes in entertainment, media and communications law. Shapiro’s name frequently pops up in association with the long list of high profile artists he has managed, including Fleetwood Mac, Wilson Phillips, Eric Clapton and Steely Dan.
Jackie Lyle, UpStage’s creative director, is Jambalaya, the Musical’s associate producer, assisted by Lauren Fontenot.
